New Surroundings = New Inspiration

As some of you know, after 16 years living at the end of the earth (or “the beach,” if you prefer a more accessible mental image) I have recently relocated to my home territory, the rolling mountains of central Maryland.  I spent my formative years very near to my current location and welcome both the familiarity and the change.

I am happy to be surrounded by the mountains again; it’s like the hum of the engines in Star Trek – the comforting sound that you only notice when it’s not there.  I am happy to be surrounded by the comforting embrace of Mother Earth in the form of these forested mountains which rim the horizon in every direction.  It’s also symbolic of the promise of adventure in my new digs: the next adventure always awaits over the next hill.

The mountains, forests, and flowing water of the Maryland countryside feed my earth-centric soul like nothing else does.  I loved the beach, and I enjoyed spending time learning to understand the ocean from a perspective I never could as merely a visitor, but it is a joy to return to the bedrock of my life – the old Catoctins, with their granite and waterfalls and mists.  Ah yes, home.

Sound Meditation and Healing

IMC-Lewes offers Sound Meditation and Healing Weekend Buddhist teacher and sound healing practitioner Carol Colacurcio returns to the Cape region for a weekend of healing on Febuary 5th and 6th at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Parish Hall in Lewes. On Friday evening, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., Colacurcio will conduct a guided music meditation and introduce its benefits. Saturday morning’s workshop, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. will further explore the use of sound to enhance one’s mental, physical, and emotional health. Using the chakra system as a guide (spinning vortexes of energy extending from the spinal column), attendees will learn to release stagnant energy and connect to the dynamic stillness within. While chairs are provided, comfortable clothing and floor mats or blankets are encouraged to deepen the experience. Carol Colacurcio is a classically trained musician, skilled in the use of cross-cultural music and sound healing as well as a long time Nyingma Tibetan Buddhist practitioner. She lives in Front Royal, VA where she sees clients for music and healing work and is an expert in Music in Hospice. She has taught at local community colleges and has produced her own original music including two CDs – Sound Accord and Tibetan Singing Bowls. Saint Peter’s Episcopal Parish Hall is at second and Mulberry Streets in Lewes. The suggested donation is $5.00 for the Public Talk and $25.00 for the workshop with suggested limited income discount of 50%. The door opens at 8:30 a.m. For information contact Nick Edge at 302-945-4094 or info@imc-lewes.org. Out and About

This morning I got to go to the Lewes Chamber of Commerce breakfast where speakers for 14 local nonprofits briefly introduced their respective organizations. Included were the Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge, the Biden Center, and the Delaware Humanities Forum. The last group was of especial interest to me. I was not aware that Delaware had an organized, focused group which supported the arts, philosophy, poetry, and other intellectual pursuits.

For the more outdoorsy of us, the Prime Hook refuge offers a multitude of free events, as does Cape Henlopen State Park’s Biden Center.

Check the LEAVES events page for updated local listings from these and other local orgs.
